Stari Bar: History under a stone
Stari Bar or Old Bar is located inland at the foot of Mount Rumija. It’s different than before. The ruins are impressive, but you need context to understand them. First mentioned in the 9th century, the city came under Byzantine control early on.
The Mediterranean powers called it Antivari. It had considerable autonomy in the 11th-15th centuries. In the 14th century, its archbishop received the title of the primate of Serbia. This is a detail that hints at the region’s complex religious and political history.
Venice ruled from 1443 to 1571. The Ottoman Turks occupied the city until 1878. The Montenegrins then took over, but the victory came at a price. The city was partially destroyed during the conflict. The building was then completed with gunpowder explosions in 1881 and 1912. People abandoned the place. Today, it serves as an unforgettable backdrop for history lovers.
Novi Bar: the modern engine
New Bar or Novi Bar is the functional center of the area. It is a major port and entertainment center. The direct train connection to Podgorica makes logistics easy for day trippers.
Since the late 1970s, the city has expanded rapidly. Why? Importing and exporting oil requires better infrastructure. With the development of industry, this place has become a center. It is no longer old-fashioned charm, but modern practicality. However, this is the gateway to the Adriatic Sea.

Bars are often overlooked. But that’s why it’s worth stopping. You get the contrast. Stari Bar offers peace and views of the crumbling walls and surrounding hills. Novi Bar has a relaxing atmosphere with views of the harbor and beach.
To the southeast is Ulcinj. It is a tourist and resort area that is very different from the industrial edge. Inland, Lake Scutari dominates the landscape. It is the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula. The general atmosphere of the area changes according to the size of the water body.
