Finnair to Modernize Regional Fleet with New Embraer E195-E2 Aircraft

Finnair has announced a significant order for up to 46 Embraer E195-E2 regional jets, a move designed to upgrade its fleet and improve connectivity within its network. The first deliveries are scheduled for the third quarter of 2027, with a phased rollout continuing through 2029.

Fleet Upgrade and Efficiency Gains

The airline will initially purchase 18 firm orders, with options for an additional 16 aircraft and purchase rights for 12 more. The Embraer E195-E2 is the latest model in the Brazilian manufacturer’s lineup, offering increased passenger capacity and fuel efficiency. With a configuration of 134 seats, the E195-E2 can accommodate 120–146 passengers and fly up to 2,600 nautical miles.

Key benefits of the new aircraft include :

  • Enhanced Passenger Comfort : The E195-E2 features a 2-2 seating layout, eliminating middle seats.
  • Improved Amenities : Each seat will be equipped with USB charging ports and high-speed internet access.
  • Fuel Efficiency : The new jets are over 30% more fuel-efficient per passenger compared to the older Embraer E190s, reducing operational costs and carbon emissions.

Strategic Implications for Finnair’s Regional Network

Finnair will operate these aircraft through its regional subsidiary, Norra, which currently flies a fleet of ATR 72-500s and Embraer E190s. The E195-E2s will allow Norra to expand its regional network, strengthening connections to and from Finland while efficiently feeding passengers into Finnair’s long-haul routes.

According to Finnair CEO Turkka Kuusisto, this investment will “reduce our CO₂ footprint, advancing our climate targets.” The airline’s expansion plans include a minimum of 18 new E195-E2s, suggesting significant growth in its regional operations.

Growing Demand for Embraer E-Jets in Europe

This order follows a similar recent announcement by Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), demonstrating growing demand for the Embraer E195-E2 in Northern Europe. The aircraft’s efficiency and passenger comfort make it a competitive choice for regional airlines.

However, Embraer E-Jets remain less popular in the United States due to structural challenges in airline operations. Pilot contracts and fleet limitations hinder broader adoption, though Avelo Airlines has recently placed an order for the plane.

Finnair’s commitment to modernizing its regional fleet with the Embraer E195-E2 will enhance passenger experience, reduce environmental impact, and strengthen its overall network connectivity. The investment signals a clear strategy for long-term growth in the regional aviation market.
