Heather H. made an honest error.

We’ve brought back these reader stories. We love a good win, but mistakes teach better. Heather holds the Chase Sapphire Reserve. She knows the value. Or so she thought.

She booked a hotel via The Edit. The plan? Secure a $250 travel credit. It sounded free money. Then came the email.

The credit wouldn’t post.

Why? Simple. She didn’t prepay.

“I wanted to use the credit,” Heather explained. It hurts because direct booking might have been cheaper anyway. She traded convenience for a promise she couldn’t claim.

This is where many get tripped up.

The Edit by Chase Travel is a perk for Reserve cardholders. It mimics elite status. Over a thousand properties involved. Even business and J.P. Morgan holders get in. But perks come with strings. Always strings.

“The credit applies only to prepaid bookings.”

That word does the heavy lifting.

If you don’t pay up front on the website, you lose the $250. Period. Heather will need to book again to trigger it. This time she knows the rule. Prepay. Book. Collect.

Not all perks vanished, though. She still gets the experience stuff. The “fluff,” some might call it, but it has real value if you use it:

  • Breakfast for two daily
  • A special benefit worth up to $100. This varies wildly. Spa? Dinner? Golf waiver? Depends on the property.
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi (if they have it)
  • Room upgrades when available
  • Early check-in and late checkout

So she isn’t empty handed. But the cash credit? Gone for that stay.

Does this change your booking strategy?

The $250 credit caps at $500 a year. It applies to stays of two nights or more. The rule is rigid. Prepay to play. If you wait until checkout, you pay full price for the privilege of having the credit available but not active.

It’s an easy fix next time. Just check the payment box before you hit submit.

We appreciate Heather sharing this. Painful lessons prevent others from feeling that same sting.

Got a story? Win or loss, send it in. We’re looking for mistakes that make us smarter. Also victories worth shouting about. Drop the details. Explain the error or the hack.

Can’t promise a reply. Too many stories, not enough hours. But if it’s good, we’ll reach out.

We’re still reading.
